Culture Center in Milan

The Research Project investigates the issues involved with introducing places of worship for the Muslim communities (Mosques) on European territory. Muslim Community is presently a minority in most Western European countries, but recently the numbers of these communities are growing, and their needs and demands for more places of worship are increasing, making their presence more significant since mosques symbolize their presence with a physical object. The reaction of European societies and the perception to this form of representation of another different culture is greatly affecting how this architecture is taking shape in European cities.

Existing Mosques in Milan

Milan, a city of 1.2 million inhabitant, where about 70,000 of Muslim religion live and work. Small scattered mosques exist in basements, abandoned factories, warehouses and buildings. These spaces are neither of standard quality not sufficient in space to accommodate the community’s number or expectations for religious practice and for socio-cultural activities.

The study on Milan intended to evaluate the current situation of the community and the existing structures at their service. The different structures were analyzed in terms of location, space and capacity, as well as a contextual study to estimate the visual and the social impact in their smaller context on a neighborhood scale.
